Main Roofing Systems:
Adhered Roofs:
An adhered system will typically consist of a structural deck, adhered vapour control layer, adhered or mechanically fastened thermal insulation and adhered Sarnafil membrane.
Mechanically Fastened:
Mechanically fastened systems are suitable for both new and refurbishment projects of any size, providing cost efficient roofing systems for exposed applications.
Green Roofs:
Green roof systems are specified for a variety of reasons, principally to manage incident rainfall or to replace the biodiverse footprint that construction destroys; creating habitat for flora and fauna. But green roofs provide a wide variety of additional benefits including amenity, thermal mass, pollution reduction, natural cooling and aesthetics.
Ballasted Roofs:
A ballasted roof is one where the roofing membrane is restrained by means of either gravel or paving slabs. Green roofs are also classed as ballasted roofs but are covered in a specific section within this site.
Sika SolaRoof Is a 20 year guaranteed Solar Roof System based on an engineered non penetrative and lightweight mounting system the Sika SolarMount-1. Sika SolarMount-1 is an aerodynamic, lightweight mounting system for the installation of rigid Photovoltaic (PV) panels to flat roofs.
Self adhered membranes Sarnafil G 410 ELF SA is a self adhered hot air weldable roof membrane that combines all the traditional and proven advantages of a Sarnafil membrane with fast and easy installation thanks to a strong self adhered fixing attachment method. Cutting installation times by up to 50 per cent with no need for the use of adhesives on site Sarnafil Self Adhered is the quick, simple solution for installers, specifiers and building owners.

SIKA COMMITTED TO VINYL’S SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE
Sika Sarnafil, the worldwide market leader in thermoplastic roofing and waterproofing membranes, is pleased to announce its dedication to further advancing the environmental benefits of Vinyl in the construction industry and beyond.
Reducing the environmental footprint
Sikaplan
The Vinyl Sustainability Council (VSC) is launching a groundbreaking initiative to advance and recognize the U.S. vinyl industry as a trusted leader in sustainability. +Vantage Vinyl is a voluntary collaboration of companies in the vinyl value chain committed to proactively advancing sustainable development, reducing their environmental footprint and making a difference by doing more with less.
“+Vantage Vinyl is the industry’s path to advance sustainable development throughout the supply chain,” said Ned Monroe, president and CEO of the Vinyl Institute. “Vinyl has come together to collaborate, anticipate upcoming challenges and identify a return on investment in sustainability. After three years of work by the Vinyl Sustainability Council, we are proud to announce this game-changing commitment.”
Cristian Barcan, the Vinyl Sustainability Council’s executive director: “Vinyl can help meet the needs of this exploding population and our declining resources. Our solution begins with advancing an industry-wide approach to sustainability.”
“For decades, Sika Sarnafil has been recognized as a sustainability leader in the vinyl roofing industry,” said Stanley Graveline, Senior Vice President Technical Services and Sustainability for Sika Sarnafil and the Chairman of the Vinyl Sustainability Council. “We are proud to have Sika Sarnafil be one of the first companies certified in the new, groundbreaking +Vantage Vinyl program.”
Participants in +Vantage Vinyl will set and meet annual goals in three priority impact areas: landfill diversion, health and safety, and emissions. The VSC identified these target areas from the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, selecting arenas where the U.S. vinyl industry can make the most impact. For example, these goals include increasing recycling efforts beyond the 1.1 billion pounds of vinyl recycled annually in U.S. and Canada; increasing emphasis on workplace health and safety initiatives and product stewardship policies designed to minimize user exposures; and identifying best practices for continually reducing direct emissions across the industry.
Vantage Vinyl is partnering with GreenCircle Certified, LLC, an independent third-party, to verify and report on key performance indicators achieved by each participating company. Membership is voluntary and open to U.S. vinyl value chain companies that are resin suppliers, raw material/additive suppliers, material compounders, end-product manufacturers, equipment manufacturers, recyclers, and distributors. Inaugural +Vantage Vinyl members include Oxy, Shintech, Westlake Chemical, Formosa Plastics, Sika Sarnafil, Chemours, Mexichem, and PolyOne. The new initiative officially launched June 4, 2019, at the Sustainable Brands conference in Detroit, Michigan.

SIKA SARNAFIL EXPLOSIVE SUCCESS FOR ROYAL GUNPOWDER MILLS HERITAGE ROOF REFURBISHMENT
A historic and archaeological treasure, the Royal Gunpowder Mills heritage site in Waltham Abbey, Essex, has been given a new lease of life with a stunning and sympathetic roof refurbishment.
Consisting of listed buildings, ancient monuments and natural aspect features, the site is a well-loved attraction. A busy hub of activity, it attracts thousands of visitors every year, with exhibitions and a programme of hands-on activities for school groups.
With previous roof coverings across the site's buildings close to derelict, a new roofing system was needed that would both guarantee a durable solution and fit with the aesthetic of the heritage buildings. To meet those needs, Sika Sarnafil G410-15EL FSA Lead Grey was specified alongside Sarnavap 1000E air and vapour control layer.
The high-quality roofing system was chosen after the project's main contractors Courtenay Builders Limited were impressed with the results from similar Sika Sarnafil projects. They also entrusted Contour Roofing with the specification and installation after seeing its award-winning track record with Sika Sarnafil.
As a site once home to tonnes of explosives and with visitors in throughout the refurbishment, the project proved challenging, requiring extensive attention to health and safety. A strict ban on naked flames and hot works meant that the plywood boards had to be primed immediately after installation and before exposure to any wet weather. The specification therefore considered this and the original system, which would have needed a completely dry substrate, was switched to a loose laid polyethylene air and vapour control layer that was more equipped for a faster installation in the expected conditions.
Further challenges were met due to the 45-degree pitch of the roof. Roof ladders had to be used to allow workers access to the complex angles and achieve a seamless finish, using Sarnafil membrane and bespoke Sarnametal flashings at abutments, changes of angle and ridge angles.
Although time consuming work that required the utmost skill to ensure the roofs were completed to the highest standards, the project was kept on track. With Contour's contract manager making daily site visits, coupled with regular site visits from Sika Sarnafil Technicians, the project finished a week early.
Jonathan Woods, managing director at Contour Roofing, says: "This was a particularly interesting roof refurbishment with unique and complex challenges due to the nature of the site. However, by ensuring we had the right team in place with relevant experience, and the added support from Sika, we were able to complete the installation a week early while still providing an excellent finish that wowed the client."
Securing a 20-year Sarnafil guarantee, the newly refurbished roofs have not only met the client's need for a stunning aesthetic, but have also provided a durable weatherproof roofing system – upholding the heritage charity's mission to conserve the site for the benefit of the general public.
