Kaldewei manufactures with bluemint® Steel the world’s first steel-enamel products made from CO2-reduced steel from thyssenkrupp Steel
KALDEWEI, Ahlen, 20th October 2021 – The premium bathroom manufacturer Kaldewei heralds a new era in sustainable bathroom design. On 6 October 2021, CEO Franz Kaldewei personally ordered the first delivery of bluemint® Steel from thyssenkrupp in Duisburg. bluemint® Steel is the balance-oriented CO2-reduced steel from thyssenkrupp Steel with an emissions reduction of 70 percent.
Franz Kaldewei underlines the importance of this groundbreaking order: “bluemint® Steel gives us and our partners the certainty that today we are already able to use the highest quality steel with a low CO2 intensity.” CO2-reduced steel is of particular importance in order to achieve the Kaldewei climate targets, laid down in the Science Based Targets and aligned with the Paris Climate Protection Agreement. “With bathroom solutions made of steel enamel, Kaldewei has always been a pioneer in the industry when it comes to sustainability. And now we are the first manufacturer in the world to process the certified bluemint® Steel from thyssenkrupp.”
Steel with a low CO2 intensity is the third important building block on the way to the sustainable, climate-neutral orientation of Kaldewei. The long service life of 30 or more years and the complete recyclability of the steel-enamel material are strong arguments in favour of Kaldewei bathroom solutions. “With the reduction of CO2 in the steel production, we overcome another hurdle in order to be able to offer our customers a premium product that combines modern luxury in the form of exquisite materials and sensual design along with sustainable thinking and action. We call this 'Luxstainability',” explains Franz Kaldewei.
Kaldewei is the first user of bluemint® Steel
On 6 October thyssenkrupp Steel presented its new product line for CO2-reduced steel. The new bluemint® steels from thyssenkrupp are based on real and verifiable CO2 savings in the blast furnace route. They mark the starting point on the way to completely climate-neutral steels. Kaldewei is the first customer to be supplied with the new climate-friendly steel from thyssenkrupp.
Specific reduction in CO2 emissions
Bernhard Osburg, CEO of thyssenkrupp Steel, explains: “The CO2 intensity of one ton of bluemint® Steel is reduced by 1.5 tons – from 2.1 to 0.6 tons.” The calculation of the CO2 saving is done according to the most internationally recognised method, on the basis of the Green House Gas (GHG) Protocol for Product Accounting and Reporting Standard. “We do not offset, but rather we reduce the emissions from our production process very specifically. Our customers can take these CO2 reductions into account in their own Scope 3 emissions,” Osburg continues.

The new bluemint® Steel gives Kaldewei the opportunity to equip sustainable projects with bathroom solutions made of exquisite steel enamel, which are characterised by a particularly good CO2 balance and which are 100 percent recyclable. The first projects are already being planned. In this way, Kaldewei is once again demonstrating its pioneering role in the areas of climate protection and resource conservation and is facing up to its responsibility towards future generations.

A shower floor masterpiece made of steel enamel
KALDEWEI, Ahlen, September 2021 - The SUPERPLAN ZERO is the latest product from Kaldewei, and it has the potential to become a blockbuster in the bathroom. Created by the Berlin designer Werner Aisslinger, the enamelled shower surface is impressive; the detail is reserved and stylish, and extremely comfortable underfoot. This sustainable aesthetic floor enhancement with its elegant lines is bound to become a highlight in every bathroom.
Superplan Zero has a story behind its development: Kaldewei has always paid attention to customer requirements in terms of shower surfaces and as such have translated these needs into this new product. Installed at floor level, the shower surface becomes part of the bathroom floor and because of the very narrow edges it is possible to tile directly up to the shower edge with almost invisible joints. The waste is placed close to the wall so that standing comfortably and moving safely on the Superplan Zero is guaranteed. The new shower surface is characterized by its elegant and precise lines and is easily accessed from three sides, without having to step up or into the surface.
The base is sustainable, extremely long-lasting and 100 percent recyclable steel enamel. The exquisite glass surface is applied to the steel using a special process and this is what gives it such a luxurious finish. Kaldewei is the only steel enamel manufacturer that produces the enamel, i.e. the basic substance for the glass coating, in-house and using a secret formulation. The quality and durability of these surfaces are legendary.
