FACADES WICTEC - WICTEC is an overall concept of modern-day architecture that reconciles the elements of heat storage, air conditioning, light provision and fire and noise protection within a single façade design.
Stick System Curtain Walls - WICTEC stick system facades are the flexible, tried-and-tested versatile solutions among WICONA’s range of facade systems:
- WICTEC 50 - is the basic version of the stick system curtain wall, with an extra-narrow face width of 50 mm, inside and outside.
- WICTEC 60 - Featuring a 60-mm face width (inside and outside), WICTEC 60 is a stick system facade that meets the highest demands. With minor additions, WICTEC 60 fulfils the most demanding requirements with regard to burglar protection, bullet resistance and fire protection.
- WICTEC 50HI - A passive house does not require an active heating system and therefore relies heavily on the thermal insulation and air-tightness of the facade. Based on the standard series, WICTEC 50 is certified for aluminium/glass facades suitable for passive houses.
- WICTEC 50A - is a mounting option which makes it possible to fix the glazing on such supporting structures directly. WICTEC offers a free choice of supporting material – aluminium, steel or wood – for an identical outer appearance and glazing technology for the curtain wall.
WICTEC Unitised Curtain Walls - straight forward from planning through to completion.
Most construction projects are subject to intense time pressure. With appropriate planning, the WICTEC unitised facade systems enable extremely straightforward processing, by means of serial production and pre-assembly of the individual facade units in the workshop. This pre-assembly process is completely unaffected by weather conditions. Consequently, this permits rapid and economical implementation for buildings of any size, whilst simultaneously enabling creative diversity and a delicate appearance.
- WICTEC 50EL - is a unitised version of the WICTEC 50 stick system. This range combines the advantages of the stick system structure with the assembly benefits of unitised curtain walling.
- WICTEC EL60 - is the slim version within the unitised curtain wall systems, with especially reduced sight lines of just 60 mm both inside and outside. As a result of optimised thermal insulation, the system leads the way with outstanding Ucw values of up to 0.9 W/(m²K).
Structural Glazing Facade:
- WICTEC 50SG - A characteristic feature of WICTEC 50SG structural glazing curtain wall is the flush design with slim silicone joints between the glass panes. The system offers all-glass technology both for vertical curtain walls and sloped roof glazing.

WICTEC 50 DH & WICTEC 60DH - Bullet resistance according to DIN EN 1522
The bullet resistance requirements for curtain walls are regulated Europe wide in the Standard DIN EN 1522. The WICTEC curtain wall series have been tested according to this standard in various profile combinations, and successfully been certified in class FB4.
- Bullet resistance can be combined with burglar resistance in the classes RC1N, RC2N, RC2, RC3 according to DIN EN 1627.

The WICTEC curtain wall series have been assigned according to the new standard EN 1627. They can easily be specified and implemented without any additional measurement according to this new standard.

PIONEERING SUSTAINABILITY WITH MERCATOR ONE

The Mercator One, in the heart of Duisburg, is the first building in Germany with a façade created from End-of-Life Hydro CIRCAL aluminium. The office and commercial property designed by Hamburg-based Hadi Teherani Architects is not only impressive in terms of sustainability, but its façade is also architecturally stunning.
A TRAILBLAZING ENTRANCE TO THE CITY
Situated directly on the centrally located Portsmouthplatz in Duisburg – between the pedestrian zone and the main railway station – this construction project is, quite literally, “trailblazing”. With its distinctive fan-like rearward-pivoting façade and floor-by-floor tiered projections, the Mercator One immediately catches the eye and simultaneously guides you into the city. The anthracite grey façade cladding gives the building a restrained character despite its striking appearance, while the generous glass surfaces imbue it with transparency and a sense of lightness. At the same time, the façade’s extraordinary silhouette, which continually reveals new and surprising perspectives, makes this building – which measures approximately 100 metres long, 17 metres wide and 26 metres high – a landmark in the surrounding urban area. The ground floor of the new building is 9,500 square metres, providing plenty of space for offices or for gastronomic or retail use. The structure of the building allows for a flexible floorplan design and is highly adaptable for all types of office concepts. For optimum user comfort, the building offers different city views which emerge in turn from the building’s lateral graduations and the fan-like twists of its main section.
SUSTAINABILITY AS A KEY PART OF DECISION MAKING
The client, Torsten Toeller – CEO of Fressnapf Holdings – placed great emphasis on environmentally conscious construction and a long-term, sustainable concept for Mercator One. All of this is reflected in the Hadi Teherani design. As lead architect Bernd Muley explains: “Our focus is always the environmental aspect. The Cradle to Cradle (C2C) principle is integral to our work. For example, when we select materials for a building, we also consider – besides the architectural aspects – where the material comes from, how efficient its manufacture is and what becomes of the material at the end of its life”.
With this in mind, the client and architect turned to WICONA systems when creating the distinctive façade of Mercator One and used Hydro CIRCAL 75R – a sustainable aluminium alloy, unique on the market, with a minimum End-of-Life (EoL) recycling proportion of at least 75%. The aluminium comes from demolition projects or from old cars, for example. This is material that has already been used once and has been returned to the production cycle. As Bernd Muley puts it: “Recycled aluminium has the same properties as new and is also extremely sustainable. It requires only 5% of the energy used for the production of new aluminium.

CLEVER FAÇADE DESIGN
The proven WICTEC 60 mullion/transom system proved to be the perfect solution for the façade, given its architectural and constructional requirements. It meant that the floor-by-floor tiered graduations and projections planned for the main section could be implemented using the flank offset of the mullion profiles – laterally parallel with the concrete soffit.
The strong deformations of up to 50 mm over the entire width of the building are proportionally absorbed in the profiles. The façade was also extensively fitted with crash-resistant glazing and a filigree profile width of 60 mm. All the windows were constructed using the WICLINE 75 evo system – and equipped with concealed turning sashes that include crash-resistant opening limiters. As Peter Hemmert, the WICONA project consultant, explains: “The passive house-compatible construction with a very low construction depth of just 75 mm is provided with an ETC insulation zone without foam filling, and therefore helps to meet the client’s stringent sustainability requirements.”
AN OUTSTANDING PROJECT WITH AN ICONIC CHARACTER
Mercator One was completed in 2020 and has since won the Bund Deutscher Architekten (The Association of German Architects) prize for North Rhine-Westphalia, Right Lower Rhine. And according to architect Bernd Muley, recycled aluminium will continue to play an increasingly important role in façade design in the future. “Mercator One is the first of its kind in Germany. I hope that the project will serve as a role model and that it will inspire other architects to use sustainable aluminium.”

WICONA PRODUCTS CHOSEN FOR THEIR CIRCULARITY AT NOVA COLLEGE

The healthcare sector is in a state of flux and technological developments follow each other in rapid succession. This also means that educational institutions specialised in healthcare training are investing in modernising their facilities. For example, Paul de Ruiter Architects developed a new Nova College educational building with a pavilion on the Nova Campus in Haarlem. The building can accommodate more students and at the same time, it houses the latest technology. The 6,000 m2 Nova College energy-neutral education building (Care) is part of a new green campus that, in addition to the new building, also includes a 500 m2 multifunctional pavilion (De Mug) and a new bicycle shed surrounded by greenery.
GREEN CIRCULAR AND HEALTHY
The existing Nova College site on the Zijlweg in Haarlem still had an unused section. Paul de Ruiter Architects has designed two sustainable buildings here. The new energy-neutral educational building is located near the main building of the Nova College in Haarlem. Together with landscape architect ZUS, the architect helped to draw up the plans for a fresh, green and attractive outdoor area.
Sustainability was central to the design of the two Nova College buildings. The education building (Care) and pavilion (De Mug). Both buildings are energy-neutral. Natural materials are used everywhere. Besides circularity, a pleasant and healthy indoor climate played an equally important role in the design of the new educational building. With the help of hybrid climate islands and windows that can be opened, excellent air quality was also created. The energy-neutral school building belongs to the Fresh Schools (Class B).
A SUSTAINABLE AND STUNNING BUILDING
The centrally located striking round multifunctional pavilion, De Mug, consists of a large wooden construction that gives the building a unique identity of its own. The green roof provides insulation and, at the same time, ensures that the building blends in beautifully with the green landscape of the campus.
The green campus grounds flow into the central atrium of the new Care education building via the glass façade.
CRADLE 2 CRADLE CERTIFICATION CONTRIBUTED TO SPECIFICATION
Paul de Ruiter chose aluminium window frames and curtain walls from WICONA. All facades had to comply with the Cradle 2 Cradle certificate. The applied systems from WICONA (WICLNE 65, WICTEC 50) Cradle 2 Cradle Silver.
Due to the high, transparent plinth facade, it was necessary to use windows that were inconspicuous but provided fresh rooms. WICLINE90 SG windows were chosen here. These windows are electrically connected. The structural glazing means that the windows do not stand out in the picture and ensure that the glare is fully transmitted across the glass.
A CIRCULAR SOLUTION FOR GREENER BUILDINGS
The basis for the project was circularity, and so WICONA supplied the window frames and curtain walls in Hydro CIRCAL 75R. Hydro CIRCAL 75R is a prime-quality aluminium alloy that contains at least 75% recycled end-of-life aluminium, a circular solution recovered from old windows, doors and curtain walls from demolition, renovation and transformation projects.
The transparent façade allows plenty of daylight to enter, while the vertical wooden façade slats protect the classrooms from heating and direct sunlight. At the same time, they give the building a warm appearance.
