Hepworth Clay drainage systems from Wavin are manufactured from natural materials to produce durable, high strength, quality products. This enables sustainable installation on site using recycled aggregates, and rigorous maintenance regimes in service. These market leading clay drainage systems are accepted within the built environment for residential, adoptable, commercial and industrial applications.

Hepworth Clay

Fired to perfection in a unique production process, vitrified clay is a well-established material for use in below-ground drainage systems. Hepworth from Wavin is the No. 1 clay drainage brand in the UK, with a reputation for product quality, technical ability and customer service.

Hepworth Clay pipes and fittings can be used for the majority of drainage installations. Whether it’s domestic, adoptable, commercial or industrial drainage you are installing. Clay’s main benefits are its durability and longevity, plus it has a good environmental profile from a raw material through manufacturing, installation, in-use to end of life.

  • Clay’s high intrinsic strength means less granular bedding is required
  • Can be used with recycled aggregates – reducing costs and environmental impact during construction
  • Locally sourced and manufactured in the UK – 100% sustainable and recyclable
  • Quality assured kitemarked to BS EN 295-1 and BS 65
  • Lifetime jetting guarantee – jetproof to 7,500 psi (at a flow rate not exceeding 20 gals/min held static for 5 minutes)
  • Especially suitable for brownfield sites – vitrified clay is resistant to almost all chemical attack
  • Ideal for sites with a high water table, removing the risk of floatation
  • Life expectancy of over 100 years

New Hepworth Clay Product Guide for designers, specifiers and installers is available

April 2021

New Hepworth Clay Product Guide for designers, specifiers and installers is available

Hepworth Clay has recently launched a new guide which includes support for installers to get the best out of clay drainage solutions and advice for designers and specifiers on choosing clay drainage solutions that adhere to the latest legislations and standards.

For designers and specifiers

The new guide includes advice and tips on designing drainage layout, along with guidance on site access point positioning for future maintenance considerations. Designers and contractors will also be able to use the guide as a reference point for confirming that their plans are structurally satisfactory and for advice on how to ensure the suggested system has adequate hydraulic capacity for proposed and future flows.

The design section of the also gives a first look at the upcoming BS 9295 standard regarding recycled aggregates for bedding clay pipes, providing tips and advice on how to best take advantage of recycled aggregates to increase sustainability of a project without increasing risk.

The guide contains sample texts to help with easier and more accurate specification of clay drainage as well as technical notes on working with difficult site conditions. This helps to reduce reliance on specifications that have been copied from previous drawings and documentation with simple to use specification clauses.
For installers

The installation section of the new guide is intended to be used for product information and guidance with links to detailed how-to videos and online training resources. The tool also gives a first look at the upcoming BS 9295 standard regarding recycled aggregates for bedding clay pipes. It provides technical notes on working with difficult site conditions with regards to product use and site safety.

Paul Wydell, Hepworth Clay Product Manager for Wavin, said: “The new guide provides much more than just product details and installation information. We’ve designed it to be a helpful reference point with advice, tips, diagrams and guidance that will help contractors and installers to work efficiently and safely with clay drainage solutions, as well as develop their understanding of the standards and regulations that inform their work.”

The tool can be downloaded digitally, or a printed version can be requested enabling installers to work from the guide in the way that suits them best.

Paul added: "It's a tool for both those that are familiar with the subject but need to update their reference material and those who are recently qualified engineers who need to build their knowledge and experience quickly and accurately. Essentially, it's a guide that will protect the reputation of your client, the practice and yourself all rolled in to one".

Hepworth - The benefits of clay pipes for jetting and maintenance

April 2021

The benefits of clay pipes for jetting and maintenance

No one wants a blockage in a drainage pipe! But blockages can and do occur and from time to time and clearance or pipe maintenance is needed. When it comes to high pressure jetting, not all pipes are created equal though. In this article we take a look at the advantages of clay pipes when maintaining operational efficiency using jetting.

Why is jetting needed?

Jetting is the use of high-pressure water jets to clean the inside of drain and sewer. It is particularly important for buildings such as schools, hospitals and prisons where there’s a higher potential for the flushing of items that aren’t suitable for the sewers and can cause blockages, such as wet wipes, cotton buds and Fat, Oil and Grease (FOG). Jetting to clear blockages can cause damage to pipes if not done correctly. The maintenance team will need to consider the material and the pressure limits of the pipes being jetted, otherwise the validity of the entire system may be compromised.

Pipe damage

The effects of pipeline damaged from a jetting operation can be two-fold. In a high water table area, infiltration can occur, leading to the cost of treating additional waste water. Contaminated water can also seep out and pollute underground aquifers, leading to fines for water companies. High pressure jetting is often used because:

Many jetting contractors carry equipment capable of jetting at higher pressures – above the 2600psi limit of flexible drainage systems.
A significant proportion of blockages require high pressures to clear them.
It can be difficult to determine what the maximum jetting pressure to avoid damage is, particularly in the case of the manhole being flooded which is often the case for blocked drains or sewers.

Such issues can be avoided with proper product specification and installation however the use of clay drainage offers considerably enhanced peace of mind in this area particularly for projects such as schools, hospitals and prisons
Jetting and Hepworth clay pipes

Hepworth Clay pipes have an unrivalled ability to withstand high pressure jetting, and are guaranteed against water jetting up to 7500psi. Vitrified Clay is a strong and sustainable product with a longer life expectancy than other materials, making it easy to maintain and remaining fit for purpose for longer. Hepworth Clay is kitemarked to BS EN 295-1 and manufactured in the UK making a clear choice for specifiers looking for to invest in the future performance of the system, having a low lifetime cost and with a high whole life value.

The strength and durability of Hepworth Clay means it can also withstand any other cleaning and unblocking equipment, such as power rodding. Hepworth Clay’s SuperSleve comes with a Lifetime Jetting Guarantee up to 7,500psi (517bar) at a flow rate not exceeding 20 gals/min and held static for not more than 5 minutes. This operating pressure is 50% higher than the WRc (Water Research Centre) requirement for clay pipes.
