Wetrooms and Waterproofing
Offering a stylish finish, with a distinct air of quality, tiles and natural stone are the ideal pairing to a wetroom. On their own, however, they do not constitute a waterproof finish; these materials, and to an even greater extent the grout often used alongside them, are merely water-resistant.
In order to achieve a waterproof result, tiles and natural stone require support behind the scenes. This comes in the form of waterproof membranes and backerboards, which when properly installed prevent water ingress for the lifetime of the installation.
Inadequate waterproofing in bathrooms and wetrooms can spell disaster, not only for the room in question but also the building as a whole. Schlüter-Systems offers integrated waterproofing and wetroom systems to protect your projects. Our solutions for this area ensure you achieve functional spaces that show off designs to best effect.
Within our range you’ll find everything you need to specify a fully waterproof wetroom solution, including:
- Tanking membranes and backerboards
- Drainage systems
- Drain grates
- Adhesives, bands and fastenings
- Ancillary products

Schlüter Solutions Help to Create Statement Surrey Wetroom
A complete Schlüter-WETROOM system, along with a number of other Schlüter products, helped in the creation of a sophisticated wetroom at a luxury home in Esher, Surrey.
The owner was embarking upon a renovation and extension of his existing home. This included a refurbishment of the residence’s 4.8m x 2.7m master en-suite.
Enlisting the services of Quell Bathrooms, the client set out the fundamentals of what he wanted – bath, shower and double basin with storage. He then gave free reign to Managing Director of Quell, Vincent Pope, to come up with a few ideas from which the final design was selected.
The resulting wetroom utilised a number of different products from Schlüter-Systems, in order to ensure a sound finish for the client’s considerable investment.
AREA: Floor (drainage) and walls
ACTION: Minimalist drainage and complete waterproofing underlay
Integrated linear drain wetroom kit, Schlüter-KERDI-LINE-WRKL, was used to provide guaranteed waterproofing and drainage for the bathroom.
This kit consists of a waterproofing and sealing kit, shower boards, drainage channel and support plus a tile support grate.
The waterproofing and sealing kit contains Schlüter-KERDI waterproofing membrane, plus Schlüter-KERDI-KEBA sealing band, Schlüter-KERDI-KERECK pre-formed corner pieces and Schlüter-KERDI-COLL sealing adhesive. The KERDI membrane from the kit was used to waterproof the back wall and around the shower wall. The rest of the room was done out with Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD waterproof backerboard in 10mm thickness. All joints and junctions were sealed with the aforementioned set of sealing products.
The 800mm linear drainage channel was installed in an intermediate location, sloped to from both sides using the Schlüter-KERDI-SHOWER-L and Schlüter-KERDI-SHOWER-LS pre-sloped shower boards. The drain is designed to be tiled to in-line with the rest of the floor - in this case with wood-effect tiles - resulting in a discreet solution.
‘Since we started using Schlüter’s wetroom kits three years’ ago, we’ve had none of the problems we would get previously”, says Vincent, “We wouldn’t deviate from them now as they offer a comprehensive and trustworthy solution to prepping a wetroom”.
AREA: Floor
ACTION: Providing heated surfaces across the room
The timber floors of the project had already been insulated, so Vincent installed the original Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT-E electric underfloor heating system. “It’s great that you can use this system throughout the whole of a room, including the shower area”, says Vincent, “Often this isn’t an option with other systems”.
Grate News from Schlüter-Systems
Grate News from Schlüter-Systems
Further enriching its drain portfolio, Schlüter-Systems showcased three new grate designs at Cersaie 2017, available soon across both its point and linear drains.
With so many options available in the way of tiles, Schlüter recognises that drains are an increasingly important element in creating a cohesive whole for a wetroom. The new designs for Schlüter®-KERDI-DRAIN and Schlüter®-KERDI-LINE —Floral, Curve and Pure—have been developed with current bathroom trends in mind, yet are versatile and neutral enough to stand the test of time.
-Floral: A geometric design with just the right amount of softness, Floral’s uniform pattern makes it equally suitable for wetrooms with a structured industrial or softly textured theme
-Curve: The simple, playful accents of the Curve design translate into grates that are the perfect complement to all manner of trends—from the organic feel of a natural retreat to the clean-cut lines of a reduced geometric wetroom
-Pure: Crisp and minimalist, Pure is a no-fuss, no-frills design that is great to have at hand for its timeless looks
The new grate designs will be available in Schlüter’s ever-popular brushed stainless steel finish. In addition, all of the new grate designs come equipped with a contour frame, making for easy cleaning and a sharp, sleek aesthetic. The linear variants will be available from late October and point variants from late November.
