Flexcrete Materials Chosen for Marine Project in Wisbech
Flexcrete’s concrete repair materials are currently being used as part of a major marine repair and protection programme being carried out in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire.
Specialist application contractor Prestec UK is carrying out the repair project at the Commercial Quay in Wisbech on behalf of client Fenland District Council. A range of materials manufactured by Flexcrete Technologies Limited, which forms part of AkzoNobel, are being used to extend the service life of the marine structure.
The Commercial Quay was built in the 1950’s and is approximately 1,000 metres long. In the early days, the port at Wisbech imported and exported corn and rapeseed oil, and other similar food and beverage goods. Today, it is used for the import and temporary storage of brick and timber building materials to await shipment to UK buyers. Wisbech sits on either side of the River Nene which is tidal and brackish. Its port is one of Cambridgeshire’s only gateways to the sea and Fenland District Council is the statutory harbour authority for most of the tidal section of the River Nene.
The Commercial Quay is of reinforced concrete construction and over the years, the structure had deteriorated due to the harsh marine environment. The first phase of the concrete repair and protection programme extended to 130 metres and comprised the repair of 36 bays.
Flexcrete products were specified on the basis of their proven performance in coastal and marine environments. The repairs were very challenging as 95% of the work was overhead working from a mobile underbridge access unit.
All damaged concrete was mechanically removed back to a sound core before the steel reinforcement was treated with 2 x 1mm coats of Steel Reinforcement Protector 841 applied by brush. For areas of high porosity concrete, Bonding Bridge 842 was used to enhance the bond between the concrete and the subsequent Flexcrete repair mortars.
Monomix, a Class R3 waterproof cementitious repair mortar, was applied to provide exceptional bond strength, excellent tensile and abrasion resistance and high diffusion resistance to acid gases and chloride ions. It was able to be applied up to thicknesses of 80mm in a single application. For areas requiring additional abrasion resistance, Monomix HD, a class R4 structural repair mortar, was used.
Marine Mortar was also used for structural repairs in marine and tidal areas. It provides excellent wash-out resistance and can withstand immersion as little as 60 minutes after placing. On completion of the repairs, all areas were treated with a 2mm application of Cementitious Coating 851 to provide long-term chloride protection, thus significantly extending the service life of the structure. Flexcrete products were chosen in conjunction with CP-Tech anodes.
Monodex Smooth Chosen to Protect Landmark Tower Once Again
Spinnaker Tower is a visitor and educational attraction which stands at 170 metres tall, offering views spanning 23 miles across Portsmouth Harbour, the city, the Solent, the South Downs and the Isle of Wight. Originally a Millennium Project, the tower was built as the centrepiece of the Renaissance of Portsmouth Harbour Project. Designed by HGP Architects, engineering consultants Scott Wilson and built by Mowlem, the Spinnaker Tower has a distinctive sail design reflecting Portsmouth’s maritime heritage.
The iconic structure was first protected with Flexcrete’s Monodex Smooth coating back in 2015 when the exterior was painted blue, metallic gold and white as part of a five-year naming rights partnership between Portsmouth City Council and Dubai-based Emirates Airline. Monodex Smooth was once again chosen for a revamp of the tower in 2021. In this latest application, specialist access contractors The Abseilers returned Spinnaker Tower back to its original white colour, following supply of Flexcrete Monodex Smooth to site through Resapol’s Southampton branch.
Following the application of Monomix HD, Cemprotec E942 – a high performance, two component, water based cementitious coating – was applied. This combined Flexcrete Monomix HD/Cemprotec E942 system was chosen on the basis of the rapid curing properties and speed of reinstatement between application of the mortar and coating as there is no need for a skim coat due to the high quality finish of the mortar.
Monodex Smooth is a water-based, high build, elastomeric, decorative coating which was specified again due to its protective properties, fast curing nature and ease of application. This was crucial for The Abseilers, as they were able to rapidly apply the coating by brush and roller to the concrete legs of the structure whilst using roped access equipment and techniques.
Monodex Smooth is a single component, water-based coating which is user-friendly and cures without the release of strong odour or hazardous solvents. It is ultra-fast drying, enabling two coat applications on the same day and can be applied all year round. It has excellent colour retention, strong UV resistance and provides excellent protection against carbonation, chloride penetration and water ingress, yet allows damp substrates to breathe. Its chloride protection makes it ideal for use in marine environments and it is able to provide exceptional weatherproof protection even in typhoon conditions, incorporating an active biocide which prevents the growth of mould and fungi on its surface. Due to its elastomeric properties, it is able to withstand thermal and structural movement without cracking or flaking – an important factor for this project as the tower can flex by up to 150mm in high winds.
