Griptop Specification Protects Sensitive Surfaces for Rhodia Chemicals and Food
The construction of a new production facility for a manufacturer of phosphates used by the food industry has included the laying of an unusually high specification floor surface using a selection of polyurethane toppings and coatings from Don Construction Products.
The work at Rhodia Chemical and Food in Widnes was carried out over a 4 day period by specialist sub-contractors. The specification for the project, which featured large quantities of DCP's Griptop polyurethane product range, was drawn up by the manufacturers' own technical department in conjunction with the main contractor.
To satisfy the multiple requirements of high grip levels as well as resistance to physical wear and chemical attack, on both vertical and horizontal surfaces, the specification comprised Griptop Primer, Griptop HD, Griptop HDMT and Griptop Seal.
The prepared substrate was first treated with Griptop Primer to provide a good chemical key between the substrate and topping and seal the surface. Griptop HD, a solvent-free polyurethane heavy-duty topping, was then trowel applied across the entire production area. To increase the slip resistance of the Griptop HD, the surface was fully blinded with aggregate and a coat of Griptop Seal, a high-build, roller applied coating was applied to seal the aggregate.
Importantly, being solvent-free and low odour, the Griptop range of products is ideally suited for food processing areas, with no problems of taint experienced.
In addition to the main floor surface, which consumed 3750kg of Griptop HD, a further 90kg of Griptop HDMT, Heavy Duty Mortar Topping was supplied to protect a plinth that runs right around the floor's perimeter. This low structure encloses the building's steel stanchions and creates a bund for liquid spillages: requiring a product with similar characteristics and the ability to adhere to vertical surfaces in the manner of a render, Griptop HDMT provided the solution.
