The heart of this impressive barn conversion is a magnificent floating elliptical staircase built on a central tubular steel spine rising from the ground floor living space to the first floor.
Ion Glass was commissioned to provide the bespoke glass balustrade that curves perfectly around the staircase and continues to create a seamless flow of glass on either side of the first floor landing.
Like all our quality glass installations the result is deceptively simple, with minimal fixings and a flawless result with no indication of the technical challenges involved.
Each individual helical balustrade panel is wholly unique with different dimensions and different radii – a significant challenge to accurately measure, draw and install
The glass is bolt-fixed to the edge of each individual tread with every panel accurately measured and manufactured to perfectly span three treads
Subtle variations in the manufacture of the steel treads had to be accommodated in the design and installation
Ion has developed a system for fixing bolts to curved glass without damage to the glass or any visual impact to the result
The glass had to meet all safety requirements and regulations without the need for a handrail
Working on behalf of the builder Ion provided a full service that included structural and technical specifications, drawings and digitally accurate measurements to ensure a perfect and compliant result.
This beautiful and unusual design statement in a barn conversion is a testament to the vision and skills of everyone involved.
