The problem
The loggia at Lainston House, a listed 17th Century hotel near Winchester, was an open walkway with little or no practical purpose. A series of brick arches along one side of the building created a pretty feature that was nevertheless largely unused.
The solution
Enclosing each arch with a single panel of glass and installing a secure glass door to one end of the loggia created an attractive integral space where the hotel could offer pre-dinner drinks, informal dining, afternoon teas or private meetings
Technical Challenges
Every Ion Glass project is fully bespoke, meeting and achieving very individual criteria. Whilst the result at Lainston House is deceptively simple, there were a number of technical challenges for Ion Glass to overcome in order to achieve an attractive span of seemingly identical glass panels.
Each brick arch was slightly different, require precise and individual measurements to ensure a perfect fit for the glass panels.
Anti-reflective glass was stipulated throughout – exceptionally difficult to achieve with panels of laminated and toughened glass of this size
The glass panels had to be positioned at a slight angle to further minimise reflectivity.
A fully frameless secure glass door was installed in the final archway, designed for minimal visual impact in the context of the full span of arches
Each panel features a bespoke glass manifestation with a floral design in keeping with the style of the hotel, created by one of Ion's skilled designers.
