FACTORY NO.1 GETS NO.1 SERVICE FROM WAVIN

Residential projects and commercial projects can have different needs when it comes to plumbing and drainage, and the same applies to whether projects are new-build or refurbishment. While blocks of apartments need quiet systems, commercial spaces need stronger pipes, likewise, refurbishments need flexible solutions to fit around existing structures, new-builds need quicker installations to run to complex timelines.

When specialist installer Gas World Ltd. had all of these aspects rolled into one development in Bristol, the team wanted high-quality, reliable products and a one-stop-shop for all solutions. Leading plastic pipe manufacturer, Wavin, was called in to assist.

Factory No. 1 in Bedminster is a multi-million-pound project on the site of the old Wills Tobacco factory. The vast space is being developed by City & Country into 270 one, two and three-bedroom apartments, combining conversions of the old building with modern new-build areas.

Gas World, having impressed City & Country on previous projects, was contracted to deliver the plumbing and drainage portfolio for the development. The installer had previously worked with Wavin products, and decided to use the manufacturer’s portfolio of solutions to service the whole site.

Phil Moore, director and operations manager at Gas World Ltd., said: “We’ve used Wavin products for years and we continue to use them because of the premium quality. The technical team at Wavin are always happy to help us, too, they provided the take offs – the design and drawings – that we needed to get work started quickly, and it helped to have that included in the package when we pitched to the client. It makes life easier to work with a brand a product you know and trust.”

Working alongside Wavin, Gas World opted to use Osma products throughout the apartments for the foul water drainage scheme, with Wavin’s Hep2O push-fit system being used for the plumbing needs of the residential space.

The challenge Gas World faced with the project was finding a drainage solution appropriate to for the buildings as drainage noise would need to be kept to a minimum to avoid disruption to any residents above. Wavin’s Acoustic Soil low-noise drainage system was chosen as it’s wall thickness and density provides superior noise insulation. With the plastic solution being lighter and easier to install than traditional cast iron alternatives, it was the clear choice for the development in Bristol.

Wayne Boswell, technical sales manager for above ground at Wavin, said: “There are many complexities to address in projects that comprise of new build and refurbishment areas, as well as both residential or commercial spaces, but Wavin’s portfolio can do the job for all.

“It was great to work with Gas World on this project to find the best solutions for the full development, and we’ll be continuing to work closely with them to ensure the team is supported with design and technical advice whenever it’s needed.”

Works began on Factory No.1 in late 2018 with completion expected in 2021.
