What is Cradle to Cradle™️?
The departure from the outdated "Cradle to Grave"
Founded in 2010, the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute aims to provide a clear, visible, and tangible validation of a product’s commitment to sustainability. To do so, it has pioneered a new approach to evaluating this commitment, doing away with the age-old ‘Cradle to Grave’. This outdated model implies a one-way manufacturing model: one useful life, even if reused and recycled, before the ultimate endpoint of waste and/or pollution. “Waste equals food” is the difference with Cradle to Cradle thinking. This guiding principle ensures that products are designed from the outset so that, after their useful lives, they provide nourishment for something new. Either they’re built from ‘biological nutrients’ that will easily reenter the soil/waterbed without depositing synthetic materials, or from ‘technical nutrients’ that can continually circulate as useful materials without degrading, like aluminium. A new beginning, a ‘circular economy’ - Cradle to Cradle.

To date, there are just a few hundred innovative and highly sustainable products that have met this prestigious standard. The following quality categories must be met, graded at Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum, the lowest achievement level representing the product’s overall mark.
