Soundcraft’s Hybrid curtain walling, windows and doors were specified for the New Six Form Study Centre & Performing Arts Building at D’overbroeck, opening in September 2017.
The former Masonic Lodge will be transformed into a Sixth Form Centre with several Science Laboratories, a library, a school hall and a spacious auditorium.
Designed by the local Architect TSH, the project reflects the desire to preserve the original Summerhill Villa which was a grand Italianate villa built in 1823 and adds to it a modern touch while preserving the natural surroundings.

Work Done
For Soundcraft the works took place, mainly in the Main Building and Hall of this immense project, where they manufactured and install their series 3 Curtain wall, incorporating their Series 1 windows and SPW501 security doors.
The design was developed around the clients drive for useable and practical teaching space.
It includes laboratories, offices and teaching rooms, along with the New 2 storey Hall incorporating kitchens offices, open spaces and retractable auditorium seating, for an even more enjoyable experience for the students and the staff.
Challenges on Site
This project is located on a challenging site with numerous Tree Preservation Orders and challenging site access. It was mainly supervised by Kingerlee’s team.
Other challenging aspects of the project were the installation of a stunning 300mm deep system for the college main entrance door, and also a testing faceted screen. Both required forward thinking and pre-planning to ensure the smooth installation on site.
The large main entrance door depth was challenging logistically and during installation. Our professional installation team took great care to ensure the hybrid timber was at all times protected from the elements as well as the usual construction site risks of damage.
A faceted screen is always challenging, ensuring that the site conditions and dimensions match the supplied materials, with multiple cuts at varying angles to ensure a smooth installation and a stunning finished product.
Products
Hybrid Series 3 curtain walling is a unique timber-aluminium composite system, with a wide variety of design alternatives. It is a traditional stick, compartmentally drained system, and is designed to meet the current building regulations. This curtain wall is Weather Rating tested to CWCT Sequence achieving 600Pa air permeability, 600Pa water tightness and 2000Pa wind resistance. It is able to receive glass and infill panels from 6 to 28mm thick depending on configuration.
Hybrid Series 1 casement window may be used independently or in combination with Hybrid Series 3 Curtain Wall system. It combines the long life and low maintenance of aluminium externally with the high insulation, environmentally focused benefits of responsibly sourced engineered timber internally. Hybrid series 1 casement windows are capable of accepting glazing up to 28mm thick depending on weight.
SPW501 security door is a commercial thermally broken aluminium door with enhanced design options offered by a clip and flush mullion section in a choice of widths. It is a high performance, thermally broken door system ideal for high volume pedestrian use. Single and double leaf options combine with single and double acting versions based on anti-finger trap (AFT) pivots.
Summary
As a result of this, the work has led to the creation of a striking new school Hall which will provide a fantastic auditorium for music & drama as well as daily dining facilities for students and staff.
